NBC handpicked 70 journalists from around the world to teach the latest in digital journalism. The day-long workshop Friday was geared toward conferences attendees who want to take their careers to the next level.
“You have to know how to be digital,” said Todd Mokhtari, vice president of news at KNBC, Los Angeles. “You have to be social media, you have to be technically savvy, but what’s getting lost in this is the writing.”
Mokhtari and the other NBCU “professors” spent the day concentrating on writing skills and embracing digital media.
“Ten years ago digital was sort of an add on that maybe you had a video or a blog or something as an extra priority, where as now it’s become a necessity,” said Lisa Villalobos, executive producer of Closing Bell, CNBC.
Villalobos says digital has integrated itself into the “DNA” of all media. She says in order to succeed in journalism in the digital age, it’s important to be digital ready:
• Learn about the differences between digital journalism and television or print.
• Know how to write in different styles.
• Keep things short. L
• Learn about different tools such as Twitter, Dataminer, and Tweetdeck in order to curate information.
• Remember, traditional rules still apply: Verify, verify, verify.
