EIJ19 opened this morning with a line of people flowing out the door of the Texas Ballroom to register or pick up credentials for the Excellence in Journalism Convention (EIJ19) .
Inside the Ballroom, the career fair was in full swing as representatives from news and media organizations around the US talked to prospective interns and employees. Hundreds of people patiently waited,

overwhelming staff and organizers.
Cinthia Maldonado, a journalist for Scripps, is here to network and find opportunities.
“Being part of the business you have to make contacts,” Maldonado said. “Really get familiar with how the industry works… the reality of the workload, and the time you have to complete
assignments.”
The students at EIJ are also doing just that, looking for connections and learning more about opportunities the industry can provide.

“It’s really crazy, there are so many people from so many places,” said Kate Sequeira, a student at the University of Southern California. “[I’m most excited about] getting to meet people and
learning more about the industry.”
Pre-registration for the event was 1,694 and that number is expected to go much higher.
“We’re going to have close to 2,000 based on how long the lines were this morning,” said Karen Hansen, director of Membership, Marketing and Communications with Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA).

The registration line went out the door.
Breakout sessions run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., ending the day with the Opening Night Reception: A night of Texas- sized fun at 8 p.m. at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. More information on workshops and events can be found online at exellenceinjournalism.org, or on their app, Excellence in Journalism 2019.
The convention is a collaboration of RTDNA, The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and the National Association of Hispanic Journalist (NAHJ).
