Susan Valot, a freelance radio reporter and producer; Errol Salamon, senior lecturer in digital media and communication at the University of Huddersfield; and Laura Laing, a freelance writer and president of the American Society of Journalists and Authors spoke at the Society of Professional Journalists 2020 Virtual Conference Sunday about freelancing in a gig economy.
The topic focused on the AB5 legislation in California as well as similar (but better) responses in New York and Minnesota. Barriers against freelance journalists continues to be a challenge. Valot and Salamon discuss the importance of wording around protecting journalists instead of hurting them.
