Al Tompkins, senior faculty for broadcast and online at Poynter Institute, doesn’t think so. To make his point, Tompkins gave a room full of journalists the unique privilege to “shoot the bird” for 1.5 seconds during a professional conference, testing previous headlines about a basketball player who allegedly flipped the bird during a game.

EIJ Celebrates Student Journalists
Though it’s no longer a swanky luncheon to celebrate the Society of Professional Journalist’s student awards, the conference still puts on a show for its younger participants. The annual student union handed out five individual awards recognizing the campus chapter of the year, campus advisers, students, teachers and graduates.
