CUNY Graduate School of Journalism’s Founding Dean Stephen B. Shepard Brings Sobering View to SPJ President’s Installation Banquet

Despite the festive celebration, Shepard gave a thoughtful, thorough and sobering view on journalism's past and future. The room of distinguished journalists listened closely; if not for Shepard's voice, one could hear a pin drop. It would be a disservice to the journalism community to let Shepard's words remain within the confines of platinum 2 banquet hall of the Anaheim Marriott. Read them here.

Grace Rauh Wins SPJ’s Sunshine Award for Outstanding Reporting on Government Accountability

The Society of Professional Journalists held its closing dinner at the Excellence in Journalism with a strong statement defending journalism. Grace Rauh, a political reporter at Spectrum News NY1 won the Sunshine Award for her investigative reports on New York City mayor Bill de Blasio. Grace Rauh is the lead plaintiff in an ongoing lawsuit titled Rauh v. de Blasio nicknamed 'Agents of the City'.

White House Correspondents Defend Journalism During Super Session

White House correspondents had a candid conversation of what it means to cover the White House in the Trump age. "I think we are living in challenging times," said CNN Senior Correspondent Jim Acosta,"Forgive me if this sounds a little too much, but at times there are attempts to twist what is being said. Our sense of reality is being warped."

RIAS Berlin Commission Alumni Discuss Neo-Nazism in 2017

The Radio and Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) is celebrating a quarter-century partnership with the Radio in the American Sector (RIAS) Berlin Commission, an organization which serves as an exchange program between journalists in Germany and the United States. The organizations met at #EIJ17 where RIAS Executive Director Erik Kirschbaum and alumni gathered to reminisce and network. They offered their unique perspectives to EIJ News about the neo-Nazi and white supremacist protesters who descended on Charlottesville, Va. which ended in one death.

#EIJ17 Panel Discusses Solutions to Low Trust in Media

Journalists are trying to find a way to reverse the public mistrust of the media. That was the focus of one panel at the Excellence in Journalism Conference in Anaheim. Jane Elizabeth of the American Press Institute says this distrust affects the bottom line for every news organization.

SPJ Ethics Chair Andrew Seaman says if news organizations say they don't have time to go deeper on news stories, they're doing journalism wrong. In a Facebook Live interview Wednesday night at the Excellence in Journalism conference in Anaheim, Seaman said journalists should describe controversial events as accurately as possible without labeling the participants.
