Silent no more: female journalists of color raise their voice at EIJ18

Female journalists of color and allies alike gathered at the 2018 Excellence in Journalism conference to raise the question “what happens when women of color are silenced in the newsroom?” Through a thoughtful conversation moderated by María Peña, Vice President of Print, National Association of Hispanic Journalists, panel attendees were left with advice and tips on how to navigate the industry as a minority and how to support their fellow minority journalists.

Stereotypes and skin color: navigating ethnicity as a latino journalist

When Denise Isaac, a Panama-born meteorologist for Miami’s Telemundo 51, moved to the United States for college, she faced an unexpected challenge mingling with her new peers. “When I first got here, people just automatically thought I was a black African-American,” Isaac said as a panelist during an #EIJ15 Saturday session, Off-Color: Navigating Race and Ethnicity as a Latino Journalist.

Diversity at EIJ14: Bringing Color to SPJ

The SPJ Diversity Committee had a lively discussion at EIJ14 on better ways to improve the experience of members of color. Although more can be done in shaping programming and recruitment, the new chair, April Bethea, plans to implement new solutions to diversify management training and membership.

The Society of Professional Journalists will start surveying 30 journalists it has trained for leadership roles to find out where they are, what they’re doing or whether they’re still working in the industry.
