SPJ Business Meeting raises debate over name change

SPJ held its annual business meeting during the EIJ 19 conference in San Antonio, Texas. With 13 resolutions on the table and not enough time to get through them all, the delegates focused on three major resolutions. Join EIJ News as we give a brief summary of the meeting.

EIJ19 is coming to an end. The Excellence in Journalism Conference brings aspiring, rising and professional journalists together once a year to expand their skills in the media industry and gain connections with others to reach their future goals.  All kinds of people from the journalism industry attend EIJ, and you never know who you’ll bump into.

Duty calls: Journalists cancel EIJ trip to cover Hurricane Dorian

Hurricane Dorian punished the Bahamas before barrelling towards Florida and the Carolinas.  The timing of the hurricane coincided with the Excellence in Journalism conference. Reporters that were ready for three days of learning and networking, canceled their plans to provide up-to-date coverage of the storm.

Journalists find stress relief at morning yoga

The Society of Professional Journalist’s Caroline Escobar, a certified yoga instructor brought relaxation to the EIJ experience Saturday morning. Escobar found a passion for yoga after experiencing a crossfit injury. After getting her certification she has been teaching, and for the second year she has conducted a yoga session to at EIJ.

Student influencer works to shift into a journalism career

Samara Perez, a senior at Texas Southern University, is trying to use her influencer status to enter the journalism industry — while emphasizing journalism’s code of conduct.   Professional journalists have felt challenged because they feel that influencers aren’t held to the higher standards of the industry.

SPJ Board of Directors Discusses Strategic Plan and New Executive Director

 Alex Tarquinio presided over her last Society of Professional Journalists board meeting Thursday morning. The meeting lasted over three hours with the board voting to change various policies including when the board can go into executive session and whether it can accept non-media sponsorships.
