EIJ 2018 By the Numbers
As the 2018 Excellence in Journalism News conference winds down here in Baltimore, attendees are beginning their journeys home. Over 1,100 people attended this year’s conference. Of these attendees 73% were professionals, 22% were students, and 2% were retirees. Some traveled further than others to get here.

Student newspapers struggle with print advertising collapse, quick transition to digital

Distrust in Media: Searching for Solutions
President Trump and the news media have something in common: low approval ratings. The latest Gallup poll has the presidents average approval rating at 40%, just below the news media’s 41%. Recent Layoffs Loom over Newspaper Industry
It’s not breaking news to say that the journalism industry is changing. The print industry in particular is seeing an increase in layoffs as a result of these transitions. At least 36% of the largest newspapers across the United States – as well as at least 23% of the highest-traffic digital-native news outlets – experienced layoffs between January 2017 and April 2018, according to a PEW Research study.

Despite the festive celebration, Shepard gave a thoughtful, thorough and sobering view on journalism's past and future. The room of distinguished journalists listened closely; if not for Shepard's voice, one could hear a pin drop. Tools covered during this session included Advanced Search, Image Search, Google Maps, My Maps, Google Street View, Google Translate and YouTube 360.
